The PTA promotes family engagement and building a stronger community through the following community events - Field Day, Spring Play, Multi-Cultural Week, Autumn Carnival, Halloween Celebration, Community Giving Event in December, and Family Movie Night.
ART IN ACTION / ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Lafayette parents teach art to grades K-3 through the PTA-funded Art in Action program. Twelve lessons are taught throughout the year, each centering on a famous masterpiece. The Artist in Residence Program is provided to students in grades 4 and 5. Students in these grades receive art instruction, dance, and drama by district-provided teachers.
EDUCATION OUTSIDE / SCIENCE TEACHER
Our Education Outside Teacher uses the school garden to teach a science standards-based curriculum to Lafayette students. The goal is to get students excited about science and the environment by providing them with hands-on learning experiences. Students not only learn science but are also taught lessons on nutrition, cooking, and gardening.
TECHNOLOGY CONSULTANT TEACHER
Our Technology Consultant Teacher collaborates with staff to integrate technology into all facets of K-5 curriculum. They work with students using computers in the classroom and in the computer lab. Their responsibilities also include troubleshooting, grant writing, and providing professional development for teachers.
REFLECTIONS ART PROGRAM
Reflections is the National PTA’s art contest. The categories include dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography, and visual arts. Judging occurs at the state and national levels. Lafayette has had a strong history of winning at both levels. The contest is open to all grades. All students are encouraged to submit entries.
Our library staff supplements classroom instruction. They help and instruct students in the choice and use of library materials. They plan and coordinate school library programs with the instructional programs of the school district. The PTA provides funds for the librarian to select materials for Lafayette’s library.
The Autumn Carnival is the first big community event of the school year! It is an afternoon of good old-fashioned fun for your entire family! The PTA sponsors this beloved annual event. Kids enjoy games, crafts, music, fabulous food, a giant inflatable, and prizes.
Field Day is an annual all-day school wide BBQ picnic at Golden Gate Park organized and sponsored by the PTA. Games and activities include hula hoops, tug-of-war, potato sack race, bean bag toss, and baseball.
4TH GRADE SACRAMENTO TRIP
The 4th grade history curriculum is supplemented by a field trip to Sacramento. Students receive a tour of the California State Capitol, learn first-hand how our state government works, and receive a greater understanding of the history of California.
5TH GRADE OUTDOOR EDUCATION
Every year, the 5th grade teachers take their classes into the Golden Gate National Recreational Area in the Marin Headlands to explore coastal environs, study ecology, and develop a deeper understanding around ways to be stewards of our environment. This is a culminating outdoor education science experience for our Lafayette students.
Our Halloween Celebration begins with a school wide parade to show off students’ costumes.Throughout the day, each classroom visits the auditorium, which is transformed into a creepy Halloween haven, much to the delight of the kids. The kids enjoy games, face painting, fortune telling, popcorn, and more treats.
Multi-Cultural Week celebrates the different cultures that make up our Lafayette Community. Students participate in an Around the World Passport Activity in their classrooms, watch student performances, and attend our Annual School Potluck in the evening. Families are asked to bring potluck dishes that represent their cultural heritage.
Lafayette partners with the city’s arts programs, including the San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Symphony, and San Francisco Ballet. Through these amazing programs, our students receive 4 to 8 weeks of hands-on instruction in dance, theater, and music. The PTA funds the assemblies for these programs.
Lafayette students have the opportunity to participate in a professional musical production. In recent years, the children have wowed the community with Annie, Willy Wonka, and Shrek. All students who want to be in the Spring Play will have a part. The musical is run entirely by parents, from direction to set building to costume creation.
